In a recent interview, former NRL coach Anthony Seibold opened up about his decision to join the newly established PNG Chiefs, set to make their NRL debut in 2028. Seibold, a renowned strategist and 2018 Coach of the Year, revealed that his move was largely influenced by the vision and leadership of the Chiefs' CEO, Lorna McPherson, and Head of Football, Michael Chammas.
The 51-year-old coach had been enjoying some family time in Europe after a challenging stint with the Manly Sea Eagles, which ended in March 2026. During this break, Seibold reconnected with his close friend and incoming head coach of the Chiefs, Willie Peters, who encouraged him to consider the unique coaching opportunity in Papua New Guinea.
"I like the vision of Lorna and Michael and where they want to take the club," Seibold said. "It's not just about rugby league; it's about creating something special and making a positive impact in the community."
Seibold's analytical mind and extensive experience, including stints with South Sydney, Brisbane, and the English rugby team, will undoubtedly be an asset to the Chiefs in their formative years. His ability to offer strategic insights and a fresh perspective will be invaluable as the club navigates the challenges of establishing itself in the NRL.
The Chiefs have already made significant player signings, including Jarome Luai, Alex Johnston, Matty Lees, Connor Watson, and Zac Lomax. With an all-out raid on the player market set for November this year, the club is aiming to assemble a competitive team for their inaugural season.
