Ricky Bottalico, a Phillies closer at the time, was the team's sole representative in the All-Star Game. It was a strange and loud week for Bottalico, who found himself hosting 'This Week in Baseball', a show he had grown up watching.
"I was miced up like you would not believe," Bottalico recalls. The experience was surreal, with Hall of Famers surrounding him and the weight of being the only Phillies player in a sea of Braves.
The Home Run Derby, won by Barry Bonds over Mark McGwire, added to the intensity. Bottalico, wired up for the show, witnessed the raw power of these legends up close, a reminder of the challenges he faced as a pitcher.

"It probably wasn't as special at the time because I was there," Bottalico reflects. "But you realize how awesome that was."

Bottalico's All-Star appearance was not just about the game. It was a chance to honor his grandmother, who couldn't attend due to her age. As his name was called, he revealed a small message under his cap: "Hi Gram."
The introductions were a mix of boos and ovations, a unique Philadelphia soundtrack. Joe Carter was booed for his '93 heroics, while Ozzie Smith received a standing ovation.
The Iron Man's Streak

"That ball in the All-Star Game, he hit that, like, four rows deep, and it was more towards [left] center field in the upper deck. This was monstrous," Bottalico remembers.

Nearly three decades later, Philadelphia is hosting another All-Star Game, this time at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies have come a long way, with six All-Stars on the current team. Bottalico's journey, from pitcher to analyst, is a testament to the power of prediction and the evolution of careers.
"For me, it's something that I was the sole representative for the Phillies," Bottalico says.
